Is peptide research legal?
In the United States, peptides designated for research use only (not intended for human consumption) generally fall under a distinct regulatory framework from pharmaceutical products. What does 'for research purposes only' actually mean?
It signals that a compound is sold for laboratory study — not for human or veterinary use. Research-use peptides are typically not FDA-approved for clinical applications. This framing is central to how the research peptide market operates.
What is HPLC purity?
HPLC (High-Performance Liquid Chromatography) is the analytical method used to measure peptide purity. Research-grade peptides are generally expected to meet ≥99% HPLC purity, documented on a third-party Certificate of Analysis.
Why does storage matter so much?
Lyophilized peptides are stable for extended periods at refrigerated or frozen temperatures. Once reconstituted, most peptides have a significantly shorter shelf life and should be protected from heat, light, and freeze-thaw cycles.
What is the difference between a peptide and a protein?
Both are chains of amino acids. By convention, peptides contain fewer than ~50 amino acids while proteins are longer. The distinction is functional more than absolute.
How do researchers choose between similar peptides?
Researchers typically compare peptides by their published research profile, structural differences, half-life, receptor selectivity, and documented stability. Cross-referencing peer-reviewed literature is the standard approach.
What is a Certificate of Analysis (COA)?
A COA is a third-party document verifying a specific batch's identity, purity, and composition. Reputable research suppliers publish COAs for every lot, ideally from an independent laboratory.
What is the difference between bacteriostatic water and sterile water?
Sterile water is pure water that has been sterilized. Bacteriostatic water (BAC water) contains 0.9% benzyl alcohol, which inhibits bacterial growth — making it the preferred solvent for multi-use research reconstitution.
