Glossary of Peptide Research Terms

A

Aggregation
The clumping of peptide molecules into insoluble assemblies, usually triggered by agitation, heat, freeze-thaw cycles, or a pH near the peptide’s isoelectric point. Aggregated peptide is no longer reliably usable in research.
Agonist
A molecule that binds a receptor and activates it, producing a response similar to the receptor’s natural ligand. Most research peptides catalogued here are agonists at a specific receptor.
Amino Acid
The building-block molecule of peptides and proteins; chains of amino acids linked by peptide bonds form peptides.
Amino Acid Sequence
The ordered list of amino acid residues that defines a peptide, conventionally written N-terminus to C-terminus using one- or three-letter codes. The sequence determines the molecule’s identity.
Analog
A compound structurally derived from a parent molecule with deliberate modifications — typically to extend half-life, improve stability, or alter receptor selectivity. Semaglutide is an analog of native GLP-1.
Antagonist
A molecule that binds a receptor without activating it, blocking the natural ligand from doing so. An antagonist produces no signal itself; its effect is the absence of one.

B

BAC Water
Bacteriostatic water — sterile water containing 0.9% benzyl alcohol, used in research to reconstitute lyophilized peptides.
Benzyl Alcohol
The bacteriostatic preservative present at 0.9% in bacteriostatic water. It inhibits bacterial growth, which is what permits a reconstituted vial to be drawn from more than once.
Bioavailability
The proportion of an administered compound that reaches systemic circulation intact. Peptides generally have very poor oral bioavailability because digestive enzymes cleave peptide bonds.
Blend
A supplier preparation combining two or more compounds in a single vial. Blends are convenient but fix the ratio between components, which removes a variable a researcher might otherwise want to control.

C

C-Terminus
The end of a peptide chain terminating in a free carboxyl group. Sequences are conventionally written ending at the C-terminus. Compare N-terminus.
Chromatogram
The output plot of an HPLC run, showing detector response against retention time. The main peak represents the target peptide; the area of the surrounding peaks is what a purity percentage actually summarises.
COA
Certificate of Analysis — a third-party document verifying a peptide's purity, identity, and composition, usually determined by HPLC or mass spectrometry.
Cyclic Peptide
A peptide whose chain forms a ring, typically through a disulfide bridge or a head-to-tail bond. Cyclisation usually increases resistance to enzymatic degradation relative to the linear form.

D

Degradation
Loss of a peptide’s intact structure over time through hydrolysis, oxidation, enzymatic cleavage, or aggregation. Temperature, light, pH, and time in solution are the main drivers.
Denaturation
The loss of a peptide or protein’s three-dimensional structure while its sequence remains intact. Because activity depends on shape, denatured material is generally inactive. Shaking, heat, and extreme pH all cause it.
Diluent
The liquid used to dissolve a lyophilised compound. Bacteriostatic water is the most common diluent for research peptides; 1% acetic acid is used for sequences with poor neutral-pH solubility.
Disulfide Bond
A covalent bond between two cysteine residues that locks part of a peptide into a fixed conformation. Reducing agents break disulfide bonds and can inactivate peptides that depend on them.
Downregulation
A cell’s reduction in receptor number or sensitivity in response to sustained stimulation. It is why continuous receptor agonism can produce the opposite downstream effect to pulsatile stimulation of the same receptor.

E

ELISA
Enzyme-Linked Immunosorbent Assay — an antibody-based method for detecting and quantifying a specific peptide in a sample. Used in research to measure concentration, distinct from HPLC’s purity role.
Endogenous
Produced naturally within an organism, as opposed to introduced externally.
Enzymatic Cleavage
The breaking of a peptide bond by a protease enzyme. It is the principal route by which peptides are cleared in biological systems and the reason most peptides have short half-lives.
Excipient
A non-active substance included in a lyophilised vial — commonly mannitol or a buffering salt — to protect the peptide during freeze-drying and aid redissolution. Excipients are listed on a thorough COA.
Exogenous
Originating from outside the body; for research peptides, this refers to the introduced compound.
Extracellular Matrix
The network of collagen, elastin, glycosaminoglycans and other molecules surrounding cells in tissue. Several tissue-repair and dermal research peptides are studied for their effect on matrix composition.

F

Freeze-Thaw Cycle
One round of freezing and thawing a solution. Each cycle stresses peptide structure and promotes aggregation, which is why reconstituted material is refrigerated rather than repeatedly frozen.

G

GHRH
Growth Hormone-Releasing Hormone — the hypothalamic peptide that stimulates pituitary growth hormone release. Sermorelin, CJC-1295 and Tesamorelin are GHRH analogs.
GHRP
Growth Hormone-Releasing Peptide — a class acting at the ghrelin receptor (GHS-R) rather than the GHRH receptor. Ipamorelin, Hexarelin, GHRP-2 and GHRP-6 belong to this class, which is why they are studied alongside but distinctly from GHRH analogs.
Glycoprotein
A protein carrying covalently attached carbohydrate chains. HCG is a glycoprotein hormone; the sugar component affects its stability and circulating half-life.
Glycosaminoglycan
A long unbranched polysaccharide, such as hyaluronic acid, that is a major structural component of the extracellular matrix. Frequently referenced in dermal and tissue-remodelling research.
GMP
Good Manufacturing Practice — a quality-assurance standard governing how products are produced, tested, and controlled.
GnRH
Gonadotropin-Releasing Hormone — the hypothalamic decapeptide that triggers pituitary release of LH and FSH. Gonadorelin is synthetic GnRH; Triptorelin is a longer-acting GnRH agonist.
Gonadotropin
A hormone acting on the gonads, principally LH and FSH. HCG acts at the LH receptor; HMG supplies both FSH and LH activity.

H

Half-Life
The time required for a substance's concentration to decrease by half under physiological conditions.
HPG Axis
The Hypothalamic-Pituitary-Gonadal axis — the feedback loop running hypothalamus (GnRH) to pituitary (LH/FSH) to gonads. Most compounds in the hormonal category act at one identifiable point along it.
HPLC
High-Performance Liquid Chromatography — the gold-standard analytical method for determining peptide purity.
Hydrolysis
Cleavage of a chemical bond by water. Peptide bonds hydrolyse slowly in aqueous solution, which is the fundamental reason lyophilised powder is more stable than reconstituted solution.

I

In Vitro
Latin for "in glass" — research conducted outside a living organism, in cell culture or a test tube. The research-use designation on these compounds refers to in-vitro and preclinical laboratory work.
In Vivo
Research conducted within a living organism. In peptide research literature this most often refers to animal models rather than human studies.
Incretin
A gut hormone released after eating that stimulates insulin secretion. GLP-1 and GIP are the two principal incretins, and the GLP-1 family of research compounds are incretin-receptor agonists.
Isoelectric Point
The pH at which a peptide carries no net electrical charge. Solubility is at its minimum here and aggregation risk at its maximum, which is why solvent pH matters for some sequences.

L

Ligand
Any molecule that binds a receptor. An endogenous ligand is the body’s own; a research peptide studied at that receptor is an exogenous one.
Lipolysis
The metabolic breakdown of stored triglycerides into free fatty acids and glycerol. It is the process the GH-fragment research compounds AOD-9604 and HGH Fragment 176-191 are studied in relation to.
Lot Number
The identifier tying a specific production batch to its Certificate of Analysis. A COA that cannot be matched to the lot number on the vial in hand documents nothing about that vial.
Lyophilized
Freeze-dried. Peptides are typically shipped in lyophilized form to preserve stability during transport and storage.

M

Mass Spectrometry
An analytical method that measures a molecule’s mass-to-charge ratio, confirming that a peptide’s molecular weight matches its stated sequence. It answers identity; HPLC answers purity. Both are needed.
Molecular Weight
The mass of one molecule, reported in daltons (Da) or g/mol. For a peptide it is determined by its sequence, which is what allows mass spectrometry to confirm identity.

N

N-Terminus
The end of a peptide chain terminating in a free amino group. Sequences are conventionally written starting from the N-terminus. Compare C-terminus.
Nootropic
A descriptor for compounds studied for effects on cognition, memory, or neuroprotection. In this library it denotes a research category, not a claim about any compound’s effects.

P

Peptide
A short chain of amino acids (typically 2–50) linked by peptide bonds; longer chains are classified as proteins.
Peptide Bond
The covalent chemical bond that links one amino acid's carboxyl group to the next amino acid's amino group.
Peptidomimetic
A molecule designed to reproduce a peptide’s interaction with its target while differing in chemical structure, usually to gain resistance to enzymatic degradation. Adipotide is described as a peptidomimetic.
Pharmaceutical Grade
Material manufactured under regulatory requirements for human medicinal use, with the associated documentation and oversight. Research-grade material is not manufactured to this standard and is not a substitute for it.
Potency
The concentration or amount of a compound required to produce a given effect. Distinct from purity: highly pure material can be low-potency if it has partially degraded or misfolded.
Protease
An enzyme that cleaves peptide bonds. Proteases in blood and tissue are the principal reason unmodified peptides have short half-lives, and resistance to them is a common design goal for analogs.
Pulsatile Secretion
Hormone release in discrete bursts rather than continuously. Several endocrine axes respond to the pattern of stimulation as much as its magnitude, so a short-acting and a long-acting analog at the same receptor can produce opposite downstream effects.
Purity
The percentage of a sample that is the target compound, in research peptides conventionally determined by HPLC. A purity figure without a chromatogram is an unverifiable claim.

R

Receptor
A protein structure in a cell that binds specific signaling molecules, triggering a cellular response.
Receptor Selectivity
The degree to which a compound acts on its intended receptor rather than related ones. Low selectivity means effects attributable to off-target binding, which complicates interpretation of results.
Reconstitution
The process of dissolving a lyophilized peptide in a solvent (usually BAC water) to create a research-use solution.
Research Grade
A designation indicating a compound is intended solely for in-vitro laboratory research, not human or veterinary use.
Residue
A single amino acid within a peptide chain. Called a residue because forming each peptide bond releases a water molecule, leaving what remains of the free amino acid.

S

Secretagogue
A substance that stimulates secretion of another substance. Growth hormone secretagogues such as MK-677 and the GHRPs prompt endogenous GH release rather than supplying GH directly.
Sequence Notation
The convention for writing a peptide’s composition, using one-letter (A, G, K) or three-letter (Ala, Gly, Lys) amino acid codes, always ordered N-terminus to C-terminus.
Shear Stress
The mechanical force applied to molecules in a liquid by vigorous movement. Shaking a reconstituted vial subjects peptides to shear stress and can denature them, which is why swirling is the standard technique.
Solubility
The extent to which a compound dissolves in a given solvent. Peptides with a high proportion of hydrophobic residues may not dissolve fully in bacteriostatic water and require an acidic solvent instead.
Stability
A compound’s resistance to degradation under defined conditions of temperature, light, pH and time. Lyophilised peptides are far more stable than reconstituted ones; stability windows vary by compound.
Sterile Water
Purified water with no preservative. Suitable for single-use preparations only — unlike bacteriostatic water, it does not inhibit bacterial growth, so a vial reconstituted with it should not be drawn from repeatedly.
Subcutaneous
Administered under the skin; a common route referenced in peptide research literature.
Synthesis
The laboratory process of creating peptides, typically via solid-phase peptide synthesis (SPPS).
Systemic
Affecting the body as a whole via circulation, as opposed to acting locally at an application site. The distinction matters when reading dermal research, where topical and systemic contexts produce very different findings.

T

Third-Party Testing
Analysis performed by a laboratory independent of the supplier. A COA issued by the seller’s own lab carries materially less evidentiary weight than one from an independent facility.
Topical
Applied to the skin surface. For a topical peptide, penetration through the stratum corneum is itself a research variable, largely governed by molecular weight and lipophilicity.
Tripeptide
A peptide of exactly three amino acid residues. GHK-Cu and AHK-Cu are copper-binding tripeptides — among the smallest molecules in the library.

U

Upregulation
A cell’s increase in receptor number or sensitivity, typically in response to reduced stimulation. The counterpart to downregulation.

V

Vasoactive
Affecting the diameter of blood vessels and therefore blood flow. VIP (Vasoactive Intestinal Peptide) is named for this property.
Vial
The sealed glass container a research peptide ships in, typically holding lyophilised powder under vacuum or inert gas with a rubber septum for withdrawal without opening.
